Contrastive Focus and Contrastive Topics in Greek

چکیده

This paper puts forward the idea that in Greek contrast is an independent feature, represented in syntax by a preverbal position. Contrast can be assigned to diierent sorts of entities, topics and foci, once a set/list of contrasting alternatives/entities has been introduced or directly implied by the discourse. Evidence for an independent treatment of contrast is provided by similarities in the distribution of contrastive topics and focus. The asymmetries between the two are explained as a result of general diierences between topics and focus. 1 Contrastive focus Consider the following data: 1 (1) A: who did you see? B: I saw John Example (1b) can be divided into two parts in terms of information packaging (Valduvi 1993). The rst part, I saw consists of the old information or ground of the utterance. John is the new information, or focus. This is a case of narrow and presentational/non-contrastive focus. Consider now the following contexts: (2) A: Did you see John or Peter? 2 B: I saw John Now, imagine a context of misunderstanding where one of the interlocutors utters (3) in order to solve the misunderstanding (3) I saw John, not Peter 1 I would like to thank my rst supervisor Caroline Heycock for helping me formulate vague intuitions about the data presented here into more concrete ideas. I would also like to thank my second supervisor Ronnie Cann for useful comments and the State Scholarships Foundation of Greece for its nancial support. 2 Keith Mitchell pointed out to me that (2a) is ambiguous between`did you see any one of the two, Peter or John' and`which one of the two did you see, Peter or John'. I use (2a) with the second reading.

Intonation of Contrastive Topic in Estonian

Contrastive topic is an information structural category that is usually associated with a specific intonation, which tends to be similar across languages (a rising pitch accent). The aim of the present study is to examine whether this also true of Estonian. Where to associate stressed additive particles? Evidence from speech prosody

Theoretical approaches mostly associate stressed additive particles (e.g., auch in German) with contrastive topics. Empirical data show that associated constituents are produced more prominently than unassociated ones but not that they are contrastive topics. This paper compares the prosodic realizations of associated constituents with contrastive and non-contrastive topics. We found no differe...

Different Alternatives for Topics and Foci: Evidence from Indefinites and Multiple WH We explore alternative sets in contrastive constructions

We explore alternative sets in contrastive constructions and argue that different information structural units can come with different alternative sets, more specifically, the alternatives coming with (contrastive) topics can differ from the ones coming with (contrastive) foci. This is surprising for some accounts of contrastive topics (e.g. Büring 2003) and calls for an analysis of alternative...

The prosody of contrastive topics in Southern Swedish

This paper presents a pilot study on the prosodic marking of a contrastive topic in Southern Swedish. A test sentence was elicited in three experimental conditions: initial focus; final focus; contrastive topic (initial word) plus focus (final word). F0 patterns were analysed in recordings of 10 speakers. A majority of the speakers distinguished clearly between the conditions, but speakers empl...

Contrastive Summarization

With the continual growth of the internet as a source of information, where a great amount of data is being uploaded every minute, the need for data compression is getting more important. This applies also to textual documents. As the amount of data grows, the probability of multiple similar documents is increasing. One way how to deal with this is to reduce the text, i.e. to use document summa...
